Salt air decides the specification
Anywhere within a mile or two of the water, salt is the deciding factor. It settles on everything, it is hygroscopic so it pulls moisture out of the air onto the surface it is sitting on, and it attacks metal continuously rather than seasonally.
The practical consequence is that ordinary hardware fails early here. Standard steel headrails, unsealed fasteners and cheap tilt mechanisms corrode from the inside where you cannot see it, and the first sign is usually a blind that stops operating rather than one that looks rusty.
For coastal Kona we specify aluminum and stainless components, powder-coated rather than painted finishes, and composite over real wood in anything with a sea view. It costs a little more per opening and it is the difference between a treatment that lasts and one that seizes up in year three.
Open-plan houses with very large openings
The Kona housing style is built around indoor-outdoor living: sliding walls, pocket doors, lanai openings that run the length of a room. Those are the hardest things in the catalogue to cover well.
The width alone rules a lot out. Past a certain span a single shade sags or gets heavy enough that nobody wants to operate it, so wide openings get split across a shared headrail or moved to a vertical product that stacks to one side. Both work; which one depends on whether you want the opening to read as a window or a door.
The other issue is that these openings are used constantly. A treatment on a lanai door gets operated several times a day, every day, which is a different duty cycle from a bedroom window. Sun, glare and what it does to a room
Kona is at 19 degrees north. The sun sits close to overhead for much of the year and the west-facing coast takes it directly through the afternoon and into a sunset that comes in almost horizontally.
That combination fades interiors faster than most people expect. Hardwood floors, rugs, artwork and upholstery all go, and on a west-facing room it happens in a few years rather than a few decades.
The treatments that address it without closing the room off are solar screens, which cut glare and ultraviolet while you carry on seeing the water, and window film, which works permanently and does not need operating.
